Fast Lens for Your Digital SLR

Why You Need a Fast Lens?

Fast lenses allow the photographer to take pictures with a higher / faster shutter speed. Very helpful if we take a picture in low ligh conditions without adding too much ISO (for example if you need to shoot indoors but can not use a flash). Fast lenses minimize the risk of image shake because of low shutter speed especially when we take pictures without a tripod.

High shutter speed also best in capturing images of birds, athletic or F1 race and lets you freeze motion objects.
Fast Lens has a wide aperture, having the ability to take picture with shallow DOF (Dept. Of Field) and make the object stand out of the nice blur background (we call it bokeh). But by using narrow DOF we should be more careful because if something goes wrong in focusing it will be very noticeable (missfocus).

Aperture on the fast lens has an f-stop value from f/4 to f/1.4 or more. Remember that the smaller the number, the maximum aperture is. And the larger aperture the faster the lens is ( see what is aperture).

Most of high speed lenses are expensive in price because larger aperture means wider front element of lenses to capture the light. So the manufacturers need heavy piece of glass. They can use higher (optical) density glass or other tricks to reduce the size of the lens elements behind the first one.
